The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has tasked the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) on the implementation of a new biometric identification cards for its members who are dockworkers and seafarers.
President-General of MWUN, Comrade Francis Bunu, who led a delegation from the union on a courtesy visit to the NIMASA Director-General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, said the biometric identification is crucial for distinguishing legitimate union members from “illegal ones parading themselves and functioning as ‘dockworkers and seafarers’.”
He stated that the measure would not only ensure proper documentation of the workforce but also enhance security by reducing theft and pilfering of goods at the nation’s seaports.
This move, he noted, would create a more conducive business environment for importers and exporters.
In addition to the biometric initiative, Bunu also spoke on a long-standing collaboration between MWUN and the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) to build a Seafarers Recreation Center in Apapa.
The proposed center he said aims to provide quality recreational facilities for sailors returning from sea, offering them a space to unwind and enjoy life on land.
Comrade Bunu highlighted that the center would not only benefit union members but also the general public, generating revenue for the union.
In his response, the NIMASA DG assured the MWUN leadership that NIMASA is fully committed to the project, which was initiated with his predecessor.
He promised that his administration would honor the agency’s agreed-upon commitments to the project.
Mobereola also congratulated Comrade Bunu on his recent election victory and expressed his desire to see a continued strong partnership between the two organizations.
