The Vice President of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Prince Segun Oduntan, has joined industry stakeholders in celebrating the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on the occasion of his birthday, hailing him as a transformative leader who has restored the pride of the Service.
In a goodwill message, Oduntan described Adeniyi- whose tenure as the 14th Comptroller-General has been marked by a series of landmark achievements- as a visionary leader whose Collaboration, Consultation, and Innovation philosophy has bridged the long-standing gap between the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and licensed agents.
He stated that since taking the helm, CGC Adeniyi has overseen a radical modernization of the Service, which has significantly improved revenue generation. He further noted that the NCS under Adeniyi’s leadership has advanced digital initiatives and trade facilitation, while streamlining cargo clearance and earning the Service global recognition.
“The successful launch of the Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) scheme and the Advanced Ruling system has moved Nigeria closer to international best practices in cargo clearing, ” he stated.
Oduntan emphasized that Adeniyi’s tenure has brought tangible relief to customs agents noting that the CGC’s approach has shifted away from a ‘policing’ mindset to one of trade facilitation.
“CGC Adeniyi has shown that you can collect record revenue while still facilitating trade. His decision to streamline the number of checkpoints and dissolve ad-hoc enforcement teams including the customs strike force has significantly reduced the cost of doing business and eliminated the bottlenecks that once frustrated our members, ” he said.
The ANLCA Vice President also praised the CGC’s open-door policy, which has allowed for regular engagement between the Customs leadership and licensed agents.
He noted that this synergy has led to a drastic reduction in friction and encouraged a culture of voluntary compliance among agents.
“As CG Adeniyi celebrates another year, we pray for continued wisdom and strength for him to steer the ship of the Nigeria Customs Service to even greater heights. His leadership is not just a win for the Customs; it is a win for the entire Nigerian economy.” he said.
