The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has started mobilizing its members in the ports, jetties and terminals to ensure their participation in the nationwide protest called by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) against the federal government over high cost of fuel.
In a letter titled, “Notice of Mobilization for Nationwide Mass Protest and Rally Against Fuel Price Increase”, MWUN said the decision was reached following a meeting of critical stakeholders of the NLC directing all its affiliates to mobilize for the mass protest on Wednesday, 2nd August.
The letter signed by the Union’s Assistant Secretary General, Mr. Erazua Oniha, reads in part: “This decision was reached in the face of the Federal Government’s seeming insensitivity to the need to urgently put necessary instruments in place to cushion the escalating cost of living to which the Nigerian working class and citizens are daily subjected without respite in sight due to the removal of subsidy from price of petrol.
“Consequently, all National Administrative Council, Central Working Committee, National Executive Council, Districts and Units, in all ports, jetties, terminals and oil and gas platforms nationwide are directed to commence immediate mobilisation of our members to ensure their participation in the nationwide mass peaceful protest and rally from Wednesday August 2, 2023.”
