The Alumni of Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron (AMANO) has been granted observer status at the Abuja Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Port State Control for West and Central African Region.
A statement by the Publicity Secretary, AMANO, Oamien Ailemen, disclosed that the approval came after an application by AMANO and a recommendation by the Port State Committee meeting held in Congo Brazzaville from September 10-13, 2024.
As an observer, AMANO will participate in and contribute to the MoU’s efforts to eradicate substandard ships within the region covering West and Central African states.
The statement reads, “We are delighted to share that our dear alumni was granted observer status by the council of Ministers following a recommendation by the Port State committee meeting held between 10th and 13th September 2024 in Congo Brazzaville.
“The approval came following an application put forward by AMANO before the committee which was deliberated and approved.
“With its mission to contribute towards excellence in the maritime sector through capacity development within the maritime sector, this status will bring AMANO into the mainstream of developing and promoting capacity and aligning programs towards common goals.”
Other organizations granted observer status include tookhe Regional Maritime University, Ghana and the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron.
The President of AMANO Mr Emmanuel Maiguwa who was in attendance expressed satisfaction with the progress and programs embarked by the MoU especially under the leadership of Captain Sunday Umoren in developing the capacity of Member states and developing ethics of Port State inspectors.
He assured that AMANO will work to support the mission and programs of the organization.
