Customs clarifies teenager’s death at Jibia border, offers condolences

Adeniyi to engage Benin Customs, others on border security, regional integration

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has clarified misinformation surrounding the reported killing of a teenager by a J5 vehicle in the Jibia border area of Katsina State on Saturday, February 3rd, expressing their deepest condolences to the bereaved family.

Initial media reports had placed blame on the Customs, claiming their officers were involved in the teenager’s death.

But the NCS, in a statement on Monday denied any involvement, stating that it officers neither drove or intercepted the J5 vehicle during the incident.

The statement issued by the Customs Public Relations Officer, Abdulahi Maiwada, said preliminary investigations reveal the J5 vehicle was transporting soybeans, and its driver is currently in police custody awaiting further investigation.

“Our attention has been drawn to the devastating loss of a young life in the Jibia Border Area of Katsina State on Saturday, February 3, 2024. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the innocent teenager whose life was tragically cut short.

“It is pertinent to address the misinformation circulating in the media regarding the reported killing of the teenager by a reckless driver of a J5 vehicle. The Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone B, headquartered in Kaduna, covers 10 states plus the FCT, including Katsina, where the Jibia border is situated.

“We wish to clarify that our operatives neither drove the J5 vehicle nor intercepted it during the reported incident, contrary to some press allegations of the involvement of our Officers. Preliminary reports suggest that the J5 vehicle was transporting soya beans, and the driver is currently in Police custody pending further investigation, ” the statement said.

Expressing his deepest sympathy, Comptroller General of Customs Bashir Adewale Adeniyi reiterated the NCS’s commitment to fostering positive relationships with border communities and conducting anti-smuggling operations without causing harm.

He urged the public to adhere to government directives and cooperate with law enforcement agencies to ensure peace and security.

Appealing for calm amidst the tragedy, the NCS acknowledged the ongoing cooperation from border communities and pledged to work together to address challenges and promote safety and prosperity for all.
