The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has expressed deep regret over the tragic boat mishap that occurred on Monday, October 7, 2024, at Imore, Lagos State.
The incident involved a fibre boat owned by Only God Marine Ltd., which veered off its designated channel and collided with a wooden passenger boat.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the captain’s vision was obstructed by heavy cargo, and negligence in following safety protocols contributed to the accident.
In a press release issued by the union, MWUN extended its condolences to the families of the victims who lost their lives in the incident, while also wishing the injured a full and swift recovery.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wish the injured a swift and full recovery,” the statement read.
The union also confirmed that arrests have been made, and prosecutions are expected to follow promptly.
MWUN commended the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, for his immediate intervention.
“We commend Mr. Bola Oyebamiji for his swift intervention, which led to the rescue of some victims and the prompt treatment of the injured. His decisive action in the immediate aftermath of the incident is worthy of recognition,”
“We applaud NIWA’s commitment to holding those responsible accountable, as this will serve as a deterrent to others,” Adeyanju stated.
MWUN further lauded Mr. Oyebamiji for his efforts in improving safety on Nigeria’s waterways, particularly through initiatives like the creation of the NIWA River Marshall, aimed at enhancing security and safety in coastal areas.
“However, we believe there is more to be done to reduce accidents, including improved monitoring of boat operators, regular channelling of coastal waters, better lighting, and constant removal of wrecks.”
“We call on the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy to provide NIWA with the necessary resources to enforce safety regulations more effectively and efficiently, ensuring that incidents like this are minimized in the future. It is our hope that this tragedy will inspire all stakeholders to prioritize safety on our waterways,” the statement read.
