The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has directed all its members in the ports, jetties, terminals and oil and gas platforms to shut down ports’ operations nationwide on Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th September, 2023.
In a statement signed by the Head of Media, MWUN, Comrade Kennedy Ikemefuna, the notice is in compliance with the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) directive to embark on a nationwide two- day warning strike against the government over hike in the price of petrol.
“The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) under the leadership of Comrade (Prince) Dr. Adewale Adeyanju, is in notice of a communique of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) directing all its affiliates to embark on a two-day nationwide strike of a total shutdown scheduled for Tuesday, 5th September and Wednesday 6th September, 2023.
“This decision is due to the Federal Government’s refusal to engage and reach agreement with the Organised Labour on critical issues of the consequences of the unfortunate hike in the price of petrol, which has unleashed massive suffering on Nigerian workers and the generality of the Nigerian citizens.
“The Maritime Workers Union as an affiliate of the NLC, are obliged to comply with the directive and has consequently instructed all our members in all ports, Jetties, terminals, and oil & gas platforms nationwide to partake on the two-day total shut down warning strike as directed by the NLC,” the statement said.
