MWUN accuses terminal operators, shipping companies of shortchanging dockworkers, seafarers on pensions

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has accused terminal operators and shipping companies of shortchanging seafarers’ and dockworkers, both key members of the Union in the remittance of their pension.

The leadership of the union led by Comrade Francis Bunu in a statement said it recently uncovered a disturbing trend of employers of labour and terminal operators failing to regularly remit their employees pensions to its designated authorities.

MWUN also alleged that some ship owners and terminal operators have stopped the remittance of dockworkers and seafarers’ PSA in there employ, which is a gross violation of labour laws.

Against this backdrop, the President -General of MWUN, Bunu warned that the Union will have no other options than to descend heavily and bring to book all the erring companies working against the ethics and practices of labour rules in their various companies.

“It is unlawful to deny workers their pensions rights either by crook or hook and we will not hesitate to call out these concessionaires and shipping companies that have defaulted in the payment of the statutory pensions of the union members, ” he said.

Comrade Bunu warned that the defaulting companies will face shutdown of their operations if the ugly trend of pension irregularities is not immediately reversed.
