The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria ( MWUN) has directed all it’s members, particularly those who are vying for elective positions within the union to cease all electioneering activities at all work locations and Union secretariats nationwide.
Consequently, the Union has placed a ban on all forms of election campaigns and electioneering activities including the display of banners at quay aprons, ports terminals, oil and gas platforms, On board vessels, office spaces and all other work premises.
In a statement by Acting Secretary General, MWUN, Oniha Ezarua, the Union noted that while it recognizes every member’s right to contest for an election, there is a need to keep all electioneering activities within the bounds of orderliness and discipline.
“It has come to the attention of the National Secretariat that election activities which indude campaigning are being taken to the places or premises of work e.g. the Quay Aprons, and even MWUN secretariats nationwide.
“Consequent to the above, the following directives are hereby issued to all members of MWUN generally, and specifically those members of the union who intend to contest for elected offices
at all levels of the union:
“All election campaigns and electioneering activities, induding placement of banners are hereby banned at Quay Aprons, Ports Terminals, Oil and Gas Platforms, On board Vessels, Office Spaces and all other work premises, including secretariats of MWUN nationwide,” the statement said.
The statement warned that any individual caught flouting the directive would face sanctions from the union’s leadership.
