As Christians all over the world celebrate Christmas, the President General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, has felicitated with Nigerians particularly maritime industry stakeholders in the country.

Adeyanju, in a statement on Sunday commended President Muhammadu Buhari for defending democracy just as he acknowledged the pivotal role of the federal ministries of Labour and Employment as well as Transportation in ensuring that the industry maintains its footing as the gateway to the nation’s economy.

Adeyanju while congratulating maritime workers for holding faith with the union in spite of the ‘trying period’ witnessed in the outgone year also expressed appreciation to the four branches of MWUN for their support and cooperation towards ensuring industrial harmony across the nation’s ports.

According to him, the successes achieved by MWUN under his watch is the result of the support and loyalty of the four branches of the union and its Presidents who have been steadfast and resolute in their commitment to driving the union forward.

He assured that the union will remain committed to the ideals of defending a worker friendly and safe work environment for its members even as he reaffirmed the union’s resolve to continue to collaborate with all well-meaning maritime operators in the new year and beyond.

The statement reads, “As this year 2021 gradually winds to an end, I, on behalf of the leadership and entire membership of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), wish to congratulate my compatriots and comrades who held faith with us throughout this very trying period.

“I extend our warm compliments to all the stakeholders who have shown and displayed total commitment to the drive and objective of taking our industry to its zenith.

“Our greetings firstly goes to his excellency, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria – Muhammadu Buhari for defending democracy. We acknowledge the pivotal role of the federal ministries of labour and employment and that of transportation in ensuring that our industry maintains its footing as the gateway to our nation’s economy.

“I therefore felicitate with the managements of the Nigerian Ports Authority, Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Nigeria Shippers Council, National Inland Waterways Authority, Seaport Terminal Operators Association of Nigeria, National Association of Stevedoring Contractors, Barge Operators Association of Nigeria and all of our employers in all ports, terminals, oil and gas platforms and jetties.

“I convey the sincere appreciation of all our members in the Nigerian Ports Authority, Seafarers, dock workers and shipping & freight forwarding for your support and cooperation which has witnessed industrial harmony in our ports nationwide.

“The successes we may have achieved are directly correlated to the support and loyalty of the four branches of MWUN and of course of the four branch presidents who have been steadfast and resolute in their commitment to driving our union forward in the belief that “forward ever, backward never”. I thank and appreciate them all.

“I also felicitate with members of the press who have always given us balanced and unbiased reportage. We are eternally grateful.

“Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria will remain one committed to the ideals of defending a worker friendly and safe work environment for its members as we reiterate this assurance, we also reassure all port users and stakeholders of our resolve to continue to collaborate with all well-meaning maritime operators in the following years starting with 2022.

“With the fourth outbreak of COVID-19, ominously dubbed as Omicron, I enjoin all Nigerians to strictly adhere to the safety protocols as announced by the federal government and stay safe.

“On this note I wish you all a merry Christmas and a prosperous 2022.”
