MWUN election: Ajayi Bamidele is the new NPA branch President, promises to foster unity

Comrade Ajayi Bamidele has been unanimously elected as the President of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria ( MWUN) Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) branch for the next four years.

The election took place unopposed at the 6th Quadrennial Branch Delegates Conference held on Monday at the Union’s national Secretariat in Lagos.

Ajayi who previously served as Treasure of the NPA branch succeeds Comrade Ifeanyi Mazeli after his two terms in office.

He was elected alongside six other members namely: – Comrade Adamu Benjamin- Vice President; Fagbemi Olakunle – Treasurer;
Adjarho Peter – Trustee; Alabi Lawrence- Trustee; Babatunde Abolore – Auditor; and Oku Ngozi Mercy – Special Female Member.

In his acceptance speech, Comrade Bamidele expressed gratitude to the members for their confidence in the new executive.

He said, “We are not going to disappoint you. I promise you that. We will try and work together,”

He acknowledged the contributions of past leaders, particularly Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, for his exemplary leadership and mentorship.

Ajayi also pledged to foster robust collaboration with the Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government Owned Companies (SSASCGOC), commending its president, Comrade Akin Bodunde, for his leadership style.

Emphasizing the importance of unity within the NPA branch, Ajayi said, “I want to say, from this day forward, there is nothing like camp in this branch. No camp for anyone. We are only but one indivisible branch.”

Representative of the Managing Director of the NPA, Ayoola Opabiyi, General Manager, Employee and Labour Relations, assured the newly elected executive that the NPA management would continue to prioritize the welfare of its employees.

She lauded the two in-house unions, MWUN and SSASCGOC, for their constructive engagement with the management.

Opabiyi charged the new executive to collaborate effectively with SSASCGOC, build upon the solid foundation laid by their predecessors, and ensure everyone is carried along.

She also commended the outgoing president, Comrade Mazeli, for stabilizing the port and sustaining peace throughout his eight-year tenure.
