MWUN PG, Adeyanju receives NIMASA Man of the Year Award for outstanding leadership

President General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Adewale Adeyanju has been recognized for his outstanding leadership and contributions to the maritime industry as he was yesterday honored with the prestigious NIMASA Man of the Year Award 2024.

The award, presented to Adeyanju by Mr. Jubril Abba, Executive Director of Maritime Labour and Cabotage Services, NIMASA at the 2024 Day of the Dockworkers celebration acknowledges Adeyanju’s commitment to improving the welfare of maritime workers and fostering a harmonious working environment.

Adeyanju’s leadership style, characterized by his commitment to scientific unionism has brought about a significant reduction in labour disputes and strikes in the maritime industry.

His ability to engage with employers and employees has created a harmonious work environment, leading to increased productivity and efficiency in the ports.

Under Adeyanju’s leadership, MWUN has successfully negotiated and signed Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA) that have significantly increased the salaries and benefits of dockworkers, seafarers and shipping workers.

In August 2024, the Adeyanju-led MWUN signed a historic new minimum wage of N200,000 – the highest in any industry in Nigeria for workers in the shipping sector. The landmark achievement, which comes after over two decades of struggle is a testament to Adeyanju’s tireless effort to improve the welfare of his members.

The union has also invested in training and capacity building programs to enhance the skills of its members.

Beyond his role as MWUN President General, Adeyanju is also a prominent figure in the Nigerian labor movement, serving as the Deputy President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC).

Adeyanju’s exceptional leadership has also not gone unnoticed internationally. He was recently elected as the Vice President of the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) Global, Executive Board Member, and Chairman of ITF Africa Region. These prestigious positions are a testament to his influence and reputation as a champion of workers’ rights globally.

Adeyanju’s humanitarian activities extend beyond the maritime sector. In 2023, he established the Prince Adewale Adeyanju Foundation (PAAF), which provides support to vulnerable communities, including the donation of school supplies and rehabilitation of old people’s homes.

As Adeyanju approaches the end of his eight-year tenure as President General of MWUN in March 2025, his indelible mark on the maritime industry will continue to inspire and motivate workers.

His remarkable legacy, forged through dedication, perseverance, and visionary leadership, will be etched in the annals of maritime history, leaving a lasting impact that will be remembered for generations to come.
