The Maritme Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has threatened to shutdown Crown Flour Mills Limited over its refusal to allow for unionization of its workers at the ports.
President General of the Union, Comrade Francis Bunu in a statement said the multinational company has enjoyed the services of its workers for the past 22 years within the ports premises but has continually denied the Union access to unionize the workers in its employ, in spite of the fact that the workers fall under the category of Maritme Workers’ Union of Nigeria.
According to the statement issued by Head of Media, MWUN, Comrade John Ikemefuna, “the sad situation the Crown Flour Mills workers have been subjected to shows how oppressive and suppressive the workers’ have been subjected to under Crown Flour Mills management for the past 22 years running.
“The PG of MWUN, Comrade Bunu, is saddened that this kind of oppression and manipulation of workers’ can still take place in this modern era of workers globalization labour initiative, where workers’ rights cannot be shortchanged, especially within their territory of operations. ”
The MWUN PG vowed to unionize the workers, stating that if the move is resisted by the management of Crown Flour Mills, the Union will be forced to withdraw the services of all the Flour Mills staff in the ports.
He added that if the unionization of workers was successful in Warri, Delta State, Lagos ports shouldn’t be an exception of good labour practice.
