The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) says it is closely monitoring the oil spill incident that occurred at the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) loading terminal, SMI, in Bonny, Rivers State.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, December 14, was caused by a ruptured pipeline.
SPDC has promptly shut down the affected pipeline and deployed containment booms to protect neighboring communities.
The agency in a statement issued by its Head of Public Relations Unit, Osagie Edward on Sunday said although the spill has reached the shoreline, the agency is closely monitoring the situation from its emergency operations center.
“We are working closely with SPDC and other stakeholders to assess the extent of the spill and determine the necessary follow-up actions,” he stated.
The agency advised members of the public to remain calm, assuring that NIMASA is committed to mitigating the impact of the spill and restoring affected areas.
