Sanwo-Olu launches 15 new Omi-Bus ferries to reduce travel time, costs

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday launched 15 new Omi-Bus ferries to the state’s waterways transportation system in an effort to provide residents with safer, faster and more comfortable trips.

The ferries, built by indigenous company Carverton Marine, under the supervision of Bureau Veritas, as the first phase of the planned 25 boats, can carry 40 passengers each and operates on a Cowry Card payment system.

Speaking at the commissioning at Badore Terminal in Ajah, Sanwo- Olu said the newly acquired ferries marks a significant milestone in his administration quest to revolutionise transportation in Lagos State.

He said, “In line with our T.H.E.M.E.S+ agenda, particularly focusing on transportation and traffic management, these ferries symbolize our commitment to transforming Lagos into a city
that thrives on efficient, clean, and sustainable transportation.

“As we all know, Lagos’s unique geography, with approximately 22 percent of its landmass comprising waterways, offers us a tremendous opportunity.

“15 out of our 20 local governments are accessible via these waterways, presenting a reliable and enjoyable alternative to road travel.”

He said the state government has made strategic investments to ensure that commuting on inland waterways becomes a viable and preferred choice.

Highlighting the benefits of the new boats, Sanwo-olu explained that a trip from Falomo in Ikoyi to Badore in Ajah takes approximately 27 minutes, significantly reducing travel time and costs compared to the hour-long journey by road.

“By introducing these 15 new ferries, we
are not only saving countless hours otherwise lost in traffic but also optimizing our public investment in water transportation, “he said.

Sanwo-Olu emphasized the boats’ reliability, comfort, and safety features, urging boat operators to adhere to safety regulations and rules of engagement on waterways.

He added that beyond the ferries, his administration has also constructed 15 new jetties and terminals, established a groundbreaking waterways Monitoring and Data Management Center (LASWA Control Room), acquired two additional patrol boats, and set up a Search and Rescue Unit alongside a floating clinic for emergencies.

The Governor also commended LASWA for distributing over 20,000 free life jackets in the past two years, demonstrating the state’s commitment to safety.

He tasked the National Inland Waterways Authority ( NIWA) and LASWA with enforcing safety compliance on waterways, including monitoring time of movement and passenger capacity, to ensure the well-being of all users.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Seun Osiyemi said the new Omi-Bus ferries, is a testament to the collective commitment to enhancing the quality of life for all Lagos residents.

“This initiative is a bold step towards achieving a more efficient, sustainable, and accessible transportation system, reflecting our unwavering dedication to progress and innovation.

“The Omi-Bus ferries project is not just about improving transportation; it is about transforming how we live and move. It is about connecting communities, fostering economic growth, and reducing the stress and congestion that often characterize our daily commutes.

“These state-of-the-art ferries, with their modern amenities and safety features, will not only ensure passengers a comfortable and secure journey but also herald a new era of convenience and efficiency in Lagos,” he said.

Earlier in his remarks, General Manager of LASWA, Mr.Oluwadamilola Emmanuel expressed gratitude to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his support and innovative leadership in improving transportation infrastructure.

He said the launch of the Nigerian-made modern ferries demonstrates the Lagos State Government’s dedication to developing water transport.

He said, These unique modern boats are equipped with revolutionary technology to ensure all commuters’ safety, comfort and convenience” and “represent our commitment to sustainability, resilience and innovation, featuring eco-friendly designs that minimise environmental impact.”

He said through safety awareness strategies, LASWA has increased ridership figures and reduced waterway accidents, facilitated multi-modal transport connections and integration at several jetties, introducing innovative solutions like Cowry Cards payment, Last-Mile Transfer Buses, and Park-and-Ride facilities.

He described LASWA as the go-to Agency when it comes to providing reliable data, research materials, and accurate time information on the Lagos Inland Waterways adding that with a state-of-the-art Waterways Monitoring and Data Management Center, LASWA is committed to providing reliable services.
