The Western Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy said three suspects have been arrested over the killing of a naval rating, Ordinary Seaman Akingbabohun SA at Idoani community in Ondo State.
A statement by the Command Information Officer, Commander Patricia Ochei, said the deceased officer, serving at the Nigerian Navy Secondary School (NNSS) Imeri Ondo State was found unconscious by operatives of Idoani police during a routine patrol after he was attacked by hoodlums.
She said the rating was rushed to the hospital but later died after efforts to revive him failed.
According to the statement, the suspects identified as Mr Ayomide Sambo, aged 20 years from Kogi state, Mr Shagari Francis aged 18 years from Nassarawa state and Mr Adeleke Johnson Fayomi aged 20 years from Idoani-Ondo were arrested by a search party deployed from the Police Division in Idoani and the Nigerian Navy Secondary School.
The statement reads, “On Tue 27 June 2023, the Idoani police on patrol found the unconscious body of Ordinary Seaman Akingbabohun SA a rating serving at the Nigerian Navy Secondary School (NNSS) Imeri Ondo State, by the road side around Idoani town market area and rushed him to Idoani General Hospital for medical attention. Unfortunately, the rating passed away after efforts by the hospital staff to revive him.
“According to the DPO Idoani Police Division, who confirmed the incident, the rating was attacked by some hoodlums in Idoani, a search party from the Police Division in Idoani and the Nigerian Navy Secondary School were deployed and this led to the arrest of three suspects who were at large at the time. The hoodlums were identified as Mr Ayomide Sambo, aged 20 years from Kogi state, Mr Shagari Francis aged 18 years from Nassarawa state and Mr Adeleke Johnson Fayomi aged 20 years from Idoani-Ondo. The suspects are being interrogated, and written statements have been obtained from them.
“The suspects are still in police custody for further investigation and prosecution.”
