The Ports Authority Police (Western) Command on Saturday held a symbolic 5-kilometre Walk Against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) as part of activities marking the 70th Anniversary of Women in Policing in Nigeria.
The awareness walk, which took place across major locations within the Apapa and Tincan Port corridors, brought together female police officers, Port stakeholders, youth groups, and civil society advocates. The event aimed to raise public consciousness on the need to eliminate all forms of violence against women and promote a safer, more inclusive society.
Speaking at the flag-off, the Commissioner of Police, Ports Authority Police (Western) Command, CP Toyin Agbaminoja, described the walk as both a celebration and a call to action.
She noted that while women have contributed significantly to policing in the last seven decades, many still face violence, discrimination, and barriers to justice.
The walk also highlighted the Command’s ongoing efforts to improve its response to SGBV cases, including enhanced reporting channels, improved investigation capacity, and collaboration with social welfare and medical support services for survivors.
Stakeholders at the event emphasized the need for sustained public sensitization, stronger law enforcement, and a united front against SGBV within the maritime and port environment.
The Ports Authority Police (Western) Command reiterates its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of all persons and calls on the public to join the fight against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence.
