Navy nabs two suspected pipeline vandals, recover gun in Bayelsa

The Nigerian Navy has arrested two suspected pipeline vandals in Bayelsa State during an intelligence-led operation targeting crude oil theft in the Niger Delta.

Director of Naval Information, Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, disclosed this in a statement, saying the arrests were made by personnel of Forward Operating Base (FOB) FORMOSO as part of ongoing efforts to curb economic sabotage in the region.

According to him, the operation was carried out on April 25, 2026, at about 3:00 a.m. following credible intelligence.

He said naval personnel raided Egbama-Angalabiri in Ekeramo Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, leading to the arrest of one Mr. Godwin, popularly known as “Idiot,” who was identified as the leader of a pipeline vandalism syndicate operating within the Clough Creek axis.

Folorunsho said intelligence and surveillance had linked the suspect to recent attacks on oil and gas facilities, while details of his residence and movement patterns were also obtained before the raid. He was eventually apprehended at a nearby night market where he was allegedly extorting illegal levies from traders.

The Navy spokesman added that a follow-up search of the suspect’s residence met resistance from armed members of the syndicate, but naval personnel swiftly responded, forcing the attackers to flee.

Items recovered from the residence included two handheld radios and other technical tools allegedly used for illegal activities. Further intelligence from the suspect led to the arrest of another suspect, Mr. Happiness, believed to be an accomplice, as well as the recovery of a pump-action gun.

The suspects have since been handed over to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Folorunsho reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to protecting the nation’s maritime domain and critical assets, warning criminal elements involved in oil theft and pipeline vandalism to desist or face decisive action.
