The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has given the management of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) a two-week ultimatum to implement the salary review for NPA workers and pay outstanding arrears dating back to January 2026, warning that its members may withdraw their services if the demand is not met by the end of June.

Deputy President-General of MWUN, Comrade Funmi Fasan, who spoke on behalf of the union, expressed frustration over the delay in implementing the salary adjustment, which was scheduled to take effect from January this year.

According to Fasan, the union had reached an agreement with NPA management in December 2025, during which the Managing Director, Abubakar Dantsoho assured workers that the salary review would be implemented from January 2026.

“There was a salary review to be implemented from January 2026 for all NPA workers, but up till now, we’ve not had anything from the NPA management. They keep pushing us, telling us that they are working on it, but nothing has happened,” she told Maritime Today online.

Fasan noted that information available to the union indicated that the salary review process had already been concluded and was only awaiting final approval.

“Our understanding is that the salary review has been done. So we want NPA management to implement it immediately and ensure that our members receive all arrears due to them from January 2026,” she stated.

Fasan recalled that after the December meeting, executives of the union’s NPA branch held another engagement with management in March 2026, where workers were assured that the new salary structure would take effect by April.

“We met with management in March and they told us the implementation would commence in April. Up till now, we have not heard anything. Management has remained silent on the matter, and our members are becoming worried,” she said.

Questioning the prolonged delay, the labour leader said the union was concerned that management might not be treating workers’ welfare issues with the seriousness they deserve.

“Our members are worried, and we are worried too. We don’t know if the management is just playing on the intelligence of NPA workers,” she added.

Fasan warned that the union would have no option but to withdraw its services if the salary review remains unimplemented by the expiration of the ultimatum at the end of June.

“From today, June 15, we are giving a final two-week ultimatum. If by the end of this month nothing is done, we may withdraw our services. A letter has already been sent to management, and we believe they will act swiftly and do the needful,” she said.
