The incident, which occurred on Saturday, March 29, 2025, the authority says presents a threat to the safety of navigation and the stability of the marine environment.

In a marine notice dated 8th April, NIWA stated that it is collaborating with marine safety officials to install warning signs and markers around the location of the sunken dredger.
“Until proper removal or mitigation steps are taken, avoiding the vicinity is strongly advised.
“Your co-operation is crucial to ensure public safety and environmental protection. While we count on your unwavering co-operation and collaboration in this regard,” the notice reads in part.
NIWA assured the public of its commitment to restoring navigational safety in the vicinity promptly.
