The Nigerian Navy on Monday opened its ships to members of the public through the landmark “Sail with the Nigerian Navy” initiative, enabling over 2,200 Nigerians to experience naval operations firsthand as part of activities commemorating the Nigerian Navy 70th Anniversary.
The programme attracted overwhelming public interest nationwide, with more than 18,000 applications received through an online registration platform.
Following a transparent electronic raffle process, successful applicants were selected and allocated to designated sailing points in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Warri, and Calabar.
A total of 725 civilians embarked on sea trips aboard 9 Nigerian Navy ships, while an additional 1,000 visitors participated in guided tours and static fleet displays onboard naval platforms.

The initiative provided participants with a rare opportunity to witness naval operations at close quarters and gain practical insight into the responsibilities of the Nigerian Navy in safeguarding the nation’s maritime domain.
Throughout the exercise, participants interacted directly with naval personnel, toured key sections of the warships, observed shipboard routines and safety procedures, and gained a deeper appreciation of the professionalism, discipline, and operational readiness required to naval service.
Speaking on the significance of the initiative, the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, stated that the programme reflects the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to strengthening civil-military relations and fostering greater public understanding of maritime security operations and the Service’s contributions to national development.
The Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command in Lagos, Rear Admiral A Mustapha noted that the initiative also served as a platform for meaningful engagement between naval personnel and members of the public, further reinforcing trust, transparency, and national ownership of maritime security efforts.

The overwhelming response to the programme despite the rain in Lagos underscores the growing interest of Nigerians in the activities of the Nigerian Navy and highlights the Service’s commitment to remaining connected to the people it serves.
