The Western Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy on Monday reaffirmed its commitment to enhanced maritime security operations and stronger civil-military relations as it hosted a Happy Hour celebration as part of activities marking the Navy’s 70th anniversary.
The event, held at the NNS Beecroft parade ground Apapa attracted dignitaries from the military, paramilitary, and maritime sector.
Among those in attendance were the Commandant Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Center, Air Vice Marshal Nnaemeka Ilo; Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Dr. Pius Akutah; Director of Maritime Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), ACG Ibinabo ArchieAbia; Controller Apapa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, Comptroller Emmanuel Oshoba as well as senior naval officers and other guests.
Speaking during the event, the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abdulahi Mustapha said the gathering provided an opportunity not only for relaxation and social interaction, but also for reflection on the Nigerian Navy’s achievements over the past seven decades.
“Since its establishment in 1956, the Nigerian Navy has continued to evolve into a formidable maritime force committed to the defenseof our nation’s territorial integrity, protection of maritimeresources,and promotion of regional and global maritime security, ” he said.
Mustapha reaffirmed the Western Naval Command commitment to supporting the strategic directives of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abass through enhanced operational readiness, effective maritime security operations, and strengthened civil-military cooperation within its area of responsibility.
He paid tribute to the founding fathers of the service as well as officers, ratings, and civilian staff, past and present, whose sacrifices, professionalism, and dedication contributed immensely to the growth and achievements of the Nigerian Navy.
He also appreciated personnel of sister services, security agencies, and strategic partners for their collaborative efforts in sustaining peace, security, and stability within the maritime domain.
He added that the Happy Hour celebration also served as an avenue to strengthen the bonds of camaraderie, friendship, and unity among personnel and stakeholders.
“As we commemorate the Nigerian Navy at 70, let us remain committed to the ideals of patriotism, discipline, professionalism, and selfless service to our dear nation, Nigeria,” Mustapha said.
Highlights of the Happy hour celebration included cultural displays by students of the Nigerian Navy Secondary school and other side attractions, which added colour and excitement to the event.
